Small changes can make a meaningful difference in safety, independence, and confidence at home.
Here are 5 practical steps you can take today,
and 5 inexpensive upgrades.

Loose rugs are a common trip hazard. Remove them, especially from frequently traveled paths through the home.

Keep hallways and frequently used routes free of cords, clutter, furniture, and anything else that narrows the path.

Move frequently used items to shelves and cabinets you can reach comfortably without climbing, stretching, or bending deeply.

Good lighting makes hazards easier to see. Replace burned-out bulbs and pay special attention to stairs, halls, and entrances

Keep a phone or other way to call for help accessible, just in case you cannot get back up.

Plug-in emergency flashlights turn on automatically when the power goes out, helping you find your way safely in the dark.

Smooth and wet surfaces can become slippery. Add non-slip grip tape or strips to tubs & showers, and to wooden or concrete stairs.

A burned-out bulb shouldn’t leave an important area dark. Two-bulb fixtures provide backup light when one bulb fails.

Use nightlights to illuminate nighttime routes, especially between the bedroom and bathroom and near stairs or changes in floor level.

Keep larger area rugs from shifting or curling by using a properly sized non-slip rug pad and securing troublesome edges.
